When we win those states, we’re going to do it through building up a presence there over time. The National Democratic Party being involved there isn’t going to change that. That’s why I think the next party chair needs to emphasize what O’Neill so simply said about all politics being local.

Also, the coastal/urban Dems (the party’s activist base) need to quit their damn whining about how Ben Nelson and Evan Bayh and Heidi Heitkamp and Joe Manchin and Claire McCaskill aren’t liberal enough. For fuck’s sake, if they were liberal enough to please New Yorkers and Californians they wouldn’t ever have been elected in their states.

A red state Dem senator who’s only a hairsbreadth to the left of a blue state Rep like Mark Kirk… is still a vote for who’ll be majority leader, and who’ll be committee chairs. Who gets to schedule hearings and what legislation ever comes to the floor.
