I know an awful lot of ‘illegals’ who have done just that, though. Good, solid people who have done everything they can to be good Americans, and, where possible, legalize their status. They appreciate the rule of law, having lived without it.

A hundred years ago, they said the same thing you write above about the Sicilians and the Poles and the Irish. Look what happened there!

Don’t confuse an opposition with illegal immigration with opposition to immigration per se; you’re much too honest a soul for that tactic.
