There simply isn’t that much oil to do so. It is a finite resource and most of it is NOT in our hands.

It might not take that much extra supply to drive down the price, especially if alternate energy sources were also pursued at the same time.
And then again, don’t forget your friendly neighbour to the north which is practically choking on proven oil reserves.
