Of course. But there is something to be said for a leader who is strong enough to keep rogue leaders (which erdogan appears to be) from feeling too comfortable about openly siding with our enemies. And if Obama were smart, he’d let turkey know that siding with iran in any meaningful way represents the type of behavior that threatens its NATO membership. Because it seems that turkey does not feel it’s cozying up to iran has any risks at all.

Under Bush, Iran was prancing around with folk dancers waving ‘uranium’ in little containers, but it was not seen by his supporters as a referendum on the effectiveness of George W. Bush. Nor should it have been.

Any analysis of international affairs that depends on a general idea of how the president is ‘seen’ by the world is basically wishful thinking.

And neither you nor I know what’s being said to Erdogan behind closed doors.
