Open talk of secession and Dixie flags are inherently racist. Any sensible black person sees a Dixie flag the way we see a swastika- and that is the correct view.

My dad is a decent person, but is in his late 80’s and comes from another time. He also listens to Rush Limbaugh a lot.

A few years ago I was eating dinner with him at a buffet restaurant that attracts practically equal numbers of blacks, Hispanics, and whites. He decided to talk about the attempts to get some Southern states to get rid of the Dixie flag. “They’re just honoring their soldiers,” he said in their defense (and his family is Yankee).

I kept looking around hoping nobody was listening to him and silently begging him to talk about something else.
