Earlier in the thread there was discussion about gays voting for school funding referendum, even though they didn’t have children. In our neck of the woods (suburban Chicago), there are communities that deliberately put these referendum on ballots when snowbirds are out of town. Many elderly people, whose children are grown and whose grandchildren live elsewhere, don’t see the need to support education for the future in their own communities. So some communities prefer to make it inconvenient for them to vote.
We have “county islands”, that is, 55+ communities inside city limits but outside the city and school districts. Personally, I hate “county islands” in general because they’re outside the tax base, but I am amused at the pot dispensaries which have opened up within this very conservative, Mormon-dominated city because they’re actually on county islands.
