They had lots of problems in hot weather, like flying their runs between the Marianas and Japan. I’ve seen pictures of seized engines, props sheared off, etc. Also, I had a friend (RIP) who was stationed on the south end of Tinian in ‘44 - ‘45 (he was a captain over some ordnance mechanics), and he talked about the B-29’s problems.
I think the hot weather made the overheating much worse, but it was there on some of the first flights.
