I think using the “Hate Crime” laws in a case like this one will confuse the issue, and stretch the intention of the law.

Zimmerman is guilty of a Stupidity Crime, and a Failure to Grasp the Seriousness of Playing Policemen Crime, but I don’t believe he was out to harm anyone out of hatred.

We all make assumptions based on appearance, and who make look out of place to us.
