The heat is on Sheriff Clarke. Finally, the local paper is calling for him to go.

Haynes: Why we think Clarke has to go

This has been building for a while - our decision to call on Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. to step down. But we finally had had enough of the so-called sheriff of Milwaukee County and his bizarre, self-indulgent behavior.

So on Tuesday afternoon, we called on Clarke to do the residents of Milwaukee County a favor and resign.

The Clarke outrages have piled up like snowdrifts in a Wisconsin blizzard these past few days. The plotlines are similar: A power-hungry politician plays the victim and tries to bully an opponent.

That would be bad enough if Clarke were just some loud-mouthed guy at the end of the bar. It’s unacceptable behavior in a public servant. Especially a public servant who has frequently neglected his duties as sheriff for Fox News appointments or other engagements while leaving the work of the sheriff’s office to someone else. Since last April, four people have died in the jail he oversees including a baby and a man who apparently perished of thirst.
