Not to make light of things, but coal mining didn’t take much more skill than a willingness to go underground.

In the Pennsylvania coal region where the anthracite was mined, you can see the layout of parts of small towns right around the breaker towers. Small cottages in rows. Most of the breakers are gone. Most of the older houses are fading. Lots of culm burners along I-81 and around that area. That is a culm mountain from mining days outside Shamokin Pa. Pull out and see the size of it? That’s AFTER about 20 years of carrying it away to be burned. You can see culm hills outside just about every town.
