Between the size of the US, and federalism, it’s better to think of the US as a collection of insane asylums, gun ranges, universities, and bars. And that’s why, even in good times, it’s hard to get the entire country to move in one direction.

Just think, we could have had insane asylums, gun ranges, universities, bars and taco trucks on every corner.
