From the thread downstairs that likened ‘Firefly’ to the confederate south fighting the union (which would make Mal a confederate). I disagree. According to to Joss Whedon the ‘central planets’ (or in the former analogy - the union) was actually an all power corporation that only wanted to help the rich (central planets). Those out on the fringes were not being cared for my the ‘corporation(s)’ thus they resisted the corporate overlords rule since they were only being used as items and not taken care of as people.

As my art teacher would say, the artist provides one possible interpretation. A lot of times, they may be influenced by things they aren’t consciously considering. Also, analogies, not being perfect, might apply in more than one situation.
