Your post got me pondering. How would the 20th century been different had the Schleffen Plan worked or perhaps the British & French armies failed at the First Battle of the Marne? As Tuchmann put it, that victory gave us the sound of shovels thudding into the turf of France and four years of stalemate that turned into the first part of the World War of the 20th Century. But if the Germans had won and then followed up from the earlier thrashing of Imperial Russia at Tannenberg? How would that have changed the development of the Bolsheviks? Could a defeat cause reform or would the revolution simply come sooner? And that is where the really big changes would start…
