Is there a virus expert /epidemiologist in the house? I have this crazy idea about COVID. The idea is that it is seasonal. Not that it goes away in Summer, but that it gets terribly worse in the cold. As if warmth and sunshine hold it back. Which would explain large outdoor events having a minimal impact as compared to even smaller indoor gatherings. Think indoor mega-church vs Sturgis or a protest march. Los Angeles locked early and opened up with very significant restrictions. Still no indoor dining etc.

is it possible this thing really thrives in the cold?

I’m not an epidemiologist, but I can play one on LGF.

If the virus got worse in the cold, then Brazil wouldn’t be the country behind the USA for horrible numbers of cases.

Moreover, that chart of Los Angeles up there shows the previous peak in the middle of July, known cold month in California /s.
