I’m in Ostrava. A former steel town, and it’s now trying to transform itself, with some success. Vitkovice is still around, but now they’re focusing more on heavy equipment manufacturing then steel production.

It’s not a bad town. Less expensive, and far less touristy than Praha.

I passed through there on my way to Poland in days of yore. On the rare occasions I am back in Prague, I hardly recognize the place I used to call home. While it is absolutely a MUCH better place to visit than in the past (there are more than 4 good restaurants in the whole city now, as only one example), the proliferation of budget flights from other parts of Europe has rendered the old town unpleasantly crowded all year round, and every pub filled with “lager louts”. In the unlikely event I find myself moving back to that part of the world, I would absolutely be to a place like Ostrava.
