After weeks of seeing various articles in the media about how the GQP was “moving past” Trump or that they were “putting distance” between the party and His Douchiness, the last 8 hours have been an absolute hoot. They’re not just defending him, they’re wrapping their gnarled and bleached white arms around him and screaming “LEAVE DON ALONE!!!!”

It’s pure political calculation.

The GOP knows they need his cultists to get elected and in order to have access to his swivel-eyed loon base, the GOP needs Cheeto Mussolini himself. If Trump’s in the slammer (let’s say), that could well be enough to cause his base to sit out an election cycle or two (or maybe more, becoming completely disillusioned with voter participation) in a fit of pique.

Trump’s perverse charisma is what drives and animates the GOP’s base - and if he’s not around, they’re worried they won’t even have enough votes to get a Republican elected as municipal dog catcher.
