Detroit is a dirt cheap place to live.

And, jobs are starting to come back!

I rather like Detroit. It is gritty and tough but not as gritty as it is made out to be and there are some real cultural attractions. Detroit is one of several cities that are proverbially regarded as hell-zones in this part of the world, normally by people who have either never been there or haven’t been there much.
San Francisco is probably the favorite target in this respect. The real place just bears no resemblance to the image it has here in the Bible belt.
