I hope you don’t think I doubted what you said about the anti-Muslim feelings and behavior. I don’t. It was just how much of that could be chalked up to not having recovered from the shock of the 9/11 attacks.

The thing is though that the geographic map of “bigotry resulting from” the 9/11 attacks wasn’t focused on the actually 9/11 attacks. It wasn’t centered on the cities who’s populations actually went through them, where one would expect such shock to be most prominent. Instead the map looks like pretty much every other map of bigotry in the US, a disproportionately Southern and rural phenomenon.

By and large the attacks just provided an excuse for people who already felt that way.
