re: #357 Pie-onist Overlord

Sigh.

I wish it was still that easy. Up until I stopped working to take care of our son full time in the early 90s, I never had trouble finding work. Now, it wasn’t high paying or anything, but I managed to get by and do ok. Not with a savings account, but basic needs were met. There were times I also worked more than one job. But, a lot of my money went to child care (my second job was at the daycare my daughter went to, so I spent 25 hours a week to pay for her to be there while I worked at my first job. I never saw her, even at the daycare job).

Fast forward 21 yrs. I’ve been a full time mom that whole time, I’ve said that here before. I cannot find work. Being a Mom does NOT COUNT as even the most basic experience (so the family values people and the people who spout how important motherhood is while denigrating it can kiss my ass). I have done all the resume polishing I can do. Bullet points, skill sets, etc. I’ve put myself out there as an autism advocate (which is true, I just never got paid a dime for it) and a host of other things. The phone does not ring. I have no professional references and I think that is what is screwing me over. I am not asking for a handout. I am asking for a entry level retail job with the opportunity to work my way up the ladder. I have NO problem with that. I have no idea how to break through that. I also don’t think people get how isolating it can be to be a Mom, especially when you have a child with a disability. There were no school volunteer things, nothing that lasted more than a few days at a time. There was no socializing with other Moms as my kid grew up, we were asked to leave every play group and Moms Morning Out program I signed us up for.

Anyhoo, these assholes still think it’s the 1970’s and 80’s where you could find jobs if you really wanted to work. It is not like that anymore. It just isn’t no matter how much they insist it is.
