it’s very true that there are lots of places in california where housing prices are ridiculous. on the other hand there are large areas of the state where you can get a good deal on a house
but the trick is, as always, to find affordable and decent lodgings close enough to where a person can find a job
in this regard, california sucks
When I was a grad student, I’d frequently buy lunch over at the commons. I got to be quite friendly with some of the food service folks there.
They were commuting in from south of Gilroy because that was where they could afford to live. (That’s an hour + if there was no traffic, each way. And …there’s never no traffic. So add another 30 minutes minimum.)
