I’ve seen that with most on-line communities of one sort or another. Things seem to sink to a certain least common denominator level of behavior that essentially is determined by the level of civility and decorum that the moderators and administrators are willing to put in the work to enforce.

Blogs, forums, MUDs, etc. Anarchy essentially doesn’t work unless you want to interact in an environment that is totally dog-eat-dog and enjoys wallowing in insult, invective, and irrationality.
