re: #374 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Slavery did involve a lot of choice; a choice by the European bankers to finance it, since some refused in spite of the monstrous profits to be made. It was a choice by African rulers who waged war for captives and sold them to the Europeans, some refused and resisted the slavers instead. Of course, most of those were killed or enslaved themselves, for interfering with commerce (libertarians would understand). It was a choice for sea captains and sailors. Many of them declined to participate in the trade even though a single voyage could reap enough profit to retire. These were apparently the ones who took the talk of hellfire seriously. It was also a choice for planters who bought the slaves, since the great majority of farmers did not use slaves. It was a choice for the governments who protected it, since without the force of law slavery could not exist.
In fact it seems to have involved choices by everyone involved, except the slaves themselves.

Pretty much the definition of slave
Forced. Involuntary.
