I imagine the nation was thrilled when Dr. Salk developed the Polio vaccine. That’s a great story in itself by the way. I read that he refused to patent the vaccine because he wanted the vaccine to benefit all of humanity. Fuck Chuckles Johnson for likening vaccinations to the horrible medical experiments done on African Americans.

The nation most certainly was. There were national TV marathons to raise money in the mid-fifties (and this in pre-satellite days). And a rush to be vaccinated once this was available. I remember lines of hundreds of children, myself included, waiting to be jabbed.
