it’s very true that there are lots of places in california where housing prices are ridiculous. on the other hand there are large areas of the state where you can get a good deal on a house

but the trick is, as always, to find affordable and decent lodgings close enough to where a person can find a job

in this regard, california sucks

And here is where Minnesota, despite a high average cost of living, has an advantage. The places where the homes are the most expensive are actually out away from the city, on the lake shores. Good housing for working-class people is actually available for a reasonable price and within range of a high density of employers.
