That’s because unlike Sanders, Sherrod grew up in Mansfield Ohio just like I did. He would know rust belt depression, slow economy, race issues…the whole thing that Bernie talks about but never had to experience.

At one time Mansfield had the largest Westinghouse manufacturing plant outside Pittsburgh. We had Tappan Appliances, Mansfield Tire, Martin Steele (farm silos, etc.) Empire Reeves Steel (feeding Tappan, Westinghouse, Fisher Body, Borg Warner Plumbing Fixtures, GM Fisher Body (GM car body panels), Ohio Brass Products (brass casting) and two huge industrial pump manufacturers, Gorman Rupp and Peabody Barnes.

And we had Isaly’s Ice Cream!!!

All of that was in a city of about 75,000 people around 1960.

Much gone by 1975.

Just like Chrissy Hynde sang about Akron…My City Was Gone!
