re: #371 Obdicut

The really big government successes from Sandy came before the storm actually hit.

Though government funding of science, whether in education or in buying the actual equipment, we were able to get early warning of the unusual course of the hurricane and its power.

Because of that, we were able to notify people in the most vulnerable areas and get them evacuated. People in the at-risk areas were able to stock up on supplies. Because of the predictions, the emergency teams knew where they would have to go afterwards.

Those two things— effective evacuation and good prediction— are the main ways that government saved everyone’s bacon.

Except for the people in Staten Island who were ordered to evacuate and didn’t, who then had the balls to complain that it took FEMA three days to start supplying them with free food. If they didn’t even have supplies to last three days why the heck did they ignore the evacuation order?
