Yes, in the 60s if you put 30 years in the steel mill you would get 13 weeks paid vacation and you had adequate life and health insurance. Your spouse didn’t have to work.

Then Nixon backer I.W. Abel gave away the union’s right to strike in their 1973 contract and it’s been downhill for the steel industry ever since. I still remember how Grandma Bacon lost her temper over that! If Grandpa had still been alive he would have been in meltdown mode. Both of them shed blood to establish the CIO in Ambridge PA.
