But even Maxwell was not entirely aware what his equations implied, AFAIK. Thatā€™s how embedded the aether concept was in physics back then. Maxwell believed his equations were entirely consistent with Newtonian mechanics.

[Actually, of the four equations, Maxwell only created one equation and modified one of the three that others had already derived. But as a group they are called Maxwellā€™s equations because he put them all together in one neat little package.]

Well, not so neat. Remember in his formulation there were 12 equations. We owe the four vector equations and the popularization of Maxwellā€™s theory to Oliver Heavisideā€”a much underappreciated man, IMO.
