This is all basic job networking stuff. At some point you get used as a job reference or have to ask someone else to be one for you. Kavanaugh asked a LOT of people for personal references because SCOTUS is a big deal.

You cannot possibly know everything about a person you act as a reference for and likewise nobody can know all of you history when they agree to be a reference for you.

Forgive me but I would never do this. Never.

References are supposed to be just that; personal acknowledgements. If they’re not there pointless and meaningless.
