My Dad’s boss-many years ago-was on one of the rescue boats off of Tinian. He mentioned to me once that almost every bomber had to use ever inch of runway to get airborne as they were almost always overloaded with bombs and fuel. Many simply went over the edge of the runway, off the cliff and ditched. Not many were able to get out of the sinking planes.
