It’s something they haven’t found in a GOP standard bearer in years. As I’ve said Trump has a lower ceiling than most elected officials but a higher floor since he inspires absolute loyalty in those who support him.
Hard to say. Goldwater was definitely a dyed in the wool conservative, and the intellectual conservative movement grew from the ashes of his 1964 campaign. But the Conservative Movement (tm) isn’t really the GOP base, at least not as the GOP is constructed today. The GOP today is a grievance-based populist cult of personality. They deserve Trump, unfortunately, the rest of us don’t.
