If I’m not mistaken, the AfD’s stronghold is largely the former DDR - they don’t perform so well in what used to be West Germany (with the exception of Bavaria, IIRC)

The most racist moment I witnessed in Germany came in Colditz. Chemnitz isn’t too far from there IIRC. My understanding is the same as yours that the AfD and far right are most popular in the former DDR.
