That’s where I first encountered Joe—the Irish half of my family didn’t tell the tale, and I was cut off from the Croatian half.

Maybe something like calling Marines Jarheads?

Also interesting is the use of the derogatory term for Hungarians (Hunkies) in the song. I don’t remember any derogatory terms for Croatian or Serb ethnicity from growing up in Pittsburgh. And ethnic identity was pretty important back in those day.
