I suspect the real issue is that the Tories are looking for someone to blame as the Northern Ireland issue unravels, yet again.

Here for example is an editorial by a Brexiteer:

From the outset of Brexit it’s been my opinion that it was unworkable with Northern Ireland. If the Brits want hard borders then that means a hard border between NI and the Republic of Ireland.

And that hard border will be hated by many Irish.

I also suspect that what set off this round of Tory unease is the polling showing that Sinn Fein is growing in popularity in NI. The Unionists in NI knew they were going to be in trouble with Brexit, but the English masses in the countryside don’t care about them and voted to Leave.

Probably the best strategy for the Tories is to actually lose a quick election, put Labour in charge, so when NI blows up then Labour can be blamed.
