He was one of the people who invented modern competitive carriage driving.

(Because he decided to stop playing Polo due to arthritis).

It used to be more of a thing for the drivers themselves, a chance to show off their skills.

My ex has a guide to carriage driving from the 1880, it covers everything from seating & greeting etiquette through to the proper way to take turns and park a carriage, etc.

I can imagine that parallel parking was a real bitch.
