What kind of Bolshie collective did you grow up in? I grew up down south where everyone was Democrat. The GOP was a non-factor in Southern politics in my lifetime until the 1980’s. The reason why so many Dems jumped ship to the GOP was because of the leftward lurch in the 60’s and 70’s.

In short, the Dems nutty fringe became the GOP’s nutty fringe. Oh, BTW, the strongest voices in the 30’s and 40’s against an anti-lynching law came from the Democrats (albeit the southern ones)—not the GOP.
