Oh, problems there are multitude, and Arpaio is an ass, to be sure. But he does appear to me to have some belief in what he regards as his duty and he knows that he will look bad if he fails at it. Black churches being attacked will count as a major failure on the part local law enforcement right now, and that means that there are otherwise wingnutty sheriffs who will work hard to ensure such attacks don’t happen.

Joe Arpaio isn’t sending out men to guard black churches out of the goodness of his heart, he’s doing it because he is afraid of looking like a failure in the eyes of the press and he’s afraid of giving the Department of Justice another angle on which to investigate him. I’ll take law enforcement doing the right thing out of fear. i’d rather have them act from a purer place, but most important is that no asshole is able to emulate DipShit (As I plan to call Dylann Storm Roof whenever possible for the short term).

No way is saying ‘He gets them whether he wants them or not’ the right thing. He only cares what his fans think, not everyone.
