re: #392 The Ghost of a Flea

And while I haven’t checked on it lately to see if things have changed. , for many years there were a bunch of German-born people of Turkish descent living in a legal limbo w/r/t citizenship they didn’t get that status as babies and were being slow-walked as adults.

Germany amended it citizenship laws as of 2000 so that anyone born in Germany to a legal resident alien is automatically granted German citizenship. (I know this because my daughter, born 1998, was born an American but her subsequent siblings born after 2000 are German)

As I said, they are not always models of acceptance and tolerance, but are much better at it than the provincial East Germans, many of whom never really interacted with a foreigner until after 1989…

I recall a Russian friend describing how Vietnamese and North Korean guest workers would head home loaded down with appliances and other things that they had “bought out from under the noses of Russian workers”….so instead of “They’re takin’ our jerrrrbs!” it was “They’re take our consumer gerrrrds!”
