Still remember the old fight JMS had on messageboards over B5 and DS9. Legend has it he tried to pitch B5 to Paramount, but they passed on it. Then, when it came time to make DS9, they took several of JMS’ ideas for the series and worked them into the new series. When the two series were airing simultaneously, both fandoms accused the other of plagiarism.

I have no doubt that Berman and Braga cribbed some ideas for DS9 from JMS and B5 to take it in a darker direction than TNG; I think that the competition between the two series made DS9 much better than it may have been otherwise.

For the record, Avery Brooks was and is a total badass.
