Living in extreme northern New York in that time you basically had three options in the winter:
1. Dress for it and go out and do things (my family)*
2. Go to Florida
3. Lay in supplies and hole up in the house.

If you liked clear and cold (20s) weather it was a nice place. Not as much “northeast gray” like Philly is today.

* - My family all skied. Many people in that area played ice hockey. And we usually kept any snow that fell in November through March. We only got 3-4’ of snow per year (as compared to places like Buffalo), but what we got we kept since the area was generally north of the jet stream and thus stayed cold.

I have some friends from upstate New York. Some of the coldest winters I’ve heard about. I just couldn’t do it.
