There is nothing stopping a child from reading a Bible in school.

Actually, I’m moved to confess at this point that there is, me. I once confiscated a copy of the King James Bible during class in a public school. I did this because the kids who had it were reading it during class time and not paying attention to the lesson. I gave it back to them after class and told them that studying scripture was a good thing, just not while we were discussing how to organize a paragraph.

I then went back to my teaching credential program and told my classmates about this episode. “What was in the Bible?” one of them asked.

“The Word of God,” said I.

“Oh,” she said, “I thought they had, like, a comic book in it or something.”

Nope. Just a Bible.
