Does “bittersweet” not mean what I think it does? That sounds like a total reproductive failure, which lacks the sweet to go with the bitter.

It means what you think it does. The news isn’t bittersweet, it’s just sad.

Unless you think that rats getting a tasty meal of partially gestated ducklings is a good thing. I suppose the rats probably felt that way. And Zinke, being a rat himself, might agree.
