You should be serious. If a gun you legally possess is used for a crime by someone else, you, as the owner, should be legally culpable for said crime.

Of course, it would require guns to be permanently stamped in a way that can’t be altered (like filing off a serial number) and having a firearms registry (at least for assault weapons, including handguns). If I need insurance/license etc. to own a damn car, no reason not to have one for a deadly weapon.

Make people secure their weapons properly, and by tracking sales to owners and making them culpable, you immediately take a big chunk out of straw-man purchases.

With an exception if the weapon was safely stored or carried. If you are legally carrying concealed, but get clunked upside the head by surprise and your gun gets stolen, you shouldn’t be held criminally liable if you properly filed a police report.
