I don’t claim to have the sophistication to know everything there is to know about Shakespeare. I have never seen one of his plays nor read one.
That said, my understanding of “Julius Caesar” as it has been performed is that the character of Caesar has usually been portrayed in the terms of contemporary political situations.
I would appreciate a one-comment education on this if I have that wrong.
It depends; some companies stick to straight-up, old-school Shakespeare whereas others will put a contemporary spin on it. Great example of the latter: Ian McKellan’s Richard III.
