When I was a grad student, I’d frequently buy lunch over at the commons. I got to be quite friendly with some of the food service folks there.

They were commuting in from south of Gilroy because that was where they could afford to live. (That’s an hour + if there was no traffic, each way. And …there’s never no traffic. So add another 30 minutes minimum.)

where i live is an hour and a half away during rush hours

fortunately as a pgmr i am able to come in at odd hours when i can do it in 50 minutes

i work for a desirable employer, so some people fly in from other parts of the state on teusday morning, sleep there teusday and weds night, and fly back after work thursday

for those able to work remotely, sometime soon we will all be able to live where we want (i only get to telecommute two days a week right now)

for those who need to live someplace affordable and get to work at 9am, commuting is torture
