i wonder what the least number of states to win the ec by one and lose the popular vote by 5m or even 10m would be (if it’s possible at all)

The only election I know of where there wasn’t fishy business where the candidate who lost the PV but won the EC was 1888 with Harrison and Cleveland and Cleveland won his famous non-consecutive second term four years later anyhow. The others: 1824, 1876, and 2000 were full of fishy shit.
