I actually hate the way Metro looks, too. I dunno why, but it really irritates me on a visceral level.

You’re totally right about the dueling GUIs, and I think it’s complicated by the fact there’s already dueling UXes in Windows 7. The fastest way for me to access or launch most programs is going to the search bar and typing it in. This doesn’t work for some programs that are stores oddly (like games on Steam) but it’s generally great. Likewise, it’s the easiest way to find a file, folder, or anything at all, as long as you named it remotely intelligently.

I feel like most Windows 7 users have no clue how good that ability is, and underuse it. Most people I see using Windows 7 access their files the old-fashioned way, by digging through folders until they find it, or by going to the start menu and finding the program.

A lot of people see this as a positive, that MS is letting people decide how they want to find their profiles, but it actually irritates me as a neither-fish-nor-fowl solution, where the search function doesn’t work perfectly and digging through file folders is clunky as hell.

I’d give them more credit for trying to update if they actually restricted themselves to one GUI and made it fantastic, rather than trying to cover their bases while still changing enough shit around to make most people uncomfortably lost.
