And most modern humans carry scraps of the Neanderthal genome. We interbred with them. Very close cousins.

Mostly humans of European/Eurasian descent. though. If we had been separate species (or genus), any offspring would have been infertile and their DNA would have not have survived to the present day. As it was, we were close enough genetically to produce fertile offspring.
