That sign that that woman is holding - “Nigg*r don’t you wish you were white” - illustrates pretty damn well what was wrong with the south. The south was deeply impoverished compared to the north, had less universities, a medieval feudal system of domination and exploitation and an inferiority complex. Mississippi was the poorest of the poor.

When you’re poor, destitute and ignorant, what are you going to do? Stomp on the person who is more poor and destitute. I’ve talked to neo-Nazis and have found, not by coincidence, that alot come from impoverished areas. That’s where ignorance takes root.

It does, but the only way to stop it is by information. Wenchwrench posted a link that they’re going to make it a mandatory curriculum to teach civil rights in MS. I’m a bit shocked that it hasn’t been mandatory before, but I’m glad it is now. There will be a lot of backlash from the kids whose parents still hang on to their bigotry, but at least they’ll get the information.
