This is what happens when you build an education system that’s obsessed with test scores.

But test scores allow students to be stacked up against each other nationally.

My husband was really surprised to learn that the school our daughter is probably going to does not even ask about class standing.

Hardly surprising. He was from a class of 50 or 60. I was from a class of 350, and our daughter’s class is something like 450. Being valedictorian of his school is a very different matter from being valedictorian of our daughter’s school, and even the grades probably mean different things. (If you tell him this, he gets irritable, so I drop it.) SAT scores are supposedly uniform, though.
